Almighty God, these past years will be indelibly inscribed in our memories.
We looked with horror on the terrorist attacks of September 11th. But we looked with honor on acts of courage by ordinary people who sacrificed themselves to prevent further death and destruction.
We shed our tears in a common bond of grief for those we loved and lost. We journeyed through a dark valley, but your light has led us to a place of hope. You have turned our grief into determination. We are resolved to do what is good, and right, and just.
Help us to remember what it means to be Americans— a people endowed with abundant blessings. Help us to cherish the freedoms we enjoy and inspire us to stand with courage, united as one Nation in the midst of any adversity.
Lord, hear this prayer for our Nation. Amen.
Compiled by a Naval Chaplin.

Sixty years I’ve been standing
Here, by the side of the road.
And the world has been passing me by
Carrying its heavy load
Some stopped in to worship
Some came in to pray,
Others passed me by
As they daily went their way.
The children came to Sunday School
And listened to the teacher
While others came at worship hour
To listen to the preacher.
Many have stood at the alter
While their vows to God were given
Some are still living today
While others have gone to heaven.
A full sixty years, I’ve been here
And many changes I have seen
But let us lift our hearts in thanks
For the years have not been lean.
God has blessed us in countless ways
Our bodies and souls he has fed.
As our memory goes over the past
We can see the way HE has led.
We want HIM to lead in the future
We want HIS church to grow
We want our lives to count for HIM
As we travel this world below.
