WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued By J. Richard Fugate
Children Must Be Restrained By Their Parents (continued)
The primary role of the parent is to act as an external control over the child’s nature. This helps to explain the reason for the almost limitless power of parental authority. Restraining the child’s nature is not all there is to child training. However, until this nature is brought under control there can be little, if any, positive training. The parent must act as the child’s external control until he can be taught internal controls. He is dependent on his parents to help control the sinful nature which seeks to enslave him.
Acknowledging the influence that your own sinful nature exerts on yourself will help you realize the importance of controlling your child’s nature. As an adult, you can probably observe certain areas in your own life where the sinful nature still exercises its control. The normal desire to eat can be distorted by the nature of sin to produce gluttony – unfulfilled indulgence. Likewise, the normal desire for sex can be distorted to insatiable lust for pornography or immoral behavior towards the opposite sex. [Or even the same sex-Robin’s inserted note] Even the simple desire to be accepted by others may be distorted by the nature to the point where a person will compromise right principles because of approbation lust. You can probably see how stronger parental controls would have helped you. You have the opportunity to help your own child become a mature adult by learning how to control his sinful nature while he is young.

For weeks, a six-year old lad kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house. One day the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child. The six-year old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Furthermore, he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event. The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap and said, "Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?"Tommy burst into tears and confessed, "I think Mommy ate it!"

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued By J. Richard Fugate

Children Must Be Restrained By Their Parents
Proverbs 29:15 “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself bringeth his mother shame.”
The word from the Hebrew translated “left to himself” is sometimes used of animals pasturing without fences or restraint. This word is also used in a general sense “to send off.” When contrasted with a child who is controlled by his parents, it pictures a child who is sent off into adulthood without being trained. The principle taught by this verse is that a child will grow up in conformity with his sinful nature if he is not restrained by his parents. In another verse God warns:
1 Samuel 3:13 “For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knoweth, because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.”
In this verse, God is speaking about Eli, the priest who raised two evil sons. His sons are now adults, but Eli is being judged because as their parent he did not restrain their sinful nature. The Hebrew word here translated “restrained” means “to make weak or feeble.” In other words, Eli should have used his parental authority to cause his sons’ sinful nature to have a feeble effect on them. Eli did not make his sons evil; “[they] made themselves vile,” but Eli did not prevent it. This verse indicates that the parent is responsible to control his child’s evil tendencies.
A child left to himself, or unrestrained by his parents, is subject to the control of his sinful nature. He is born with neither the knowledge to know what is right and best for himself, nor the internal control to conquer his constant temptation to sin. The longer a child is allowed to grow up unrestrained, the more he becomes enslaved to the self-indulgence of his desires. It would be cruel not to help him control himself.

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother," she asked "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued By J. Richard Fugate
Each Child is Born with this Sinful Human Nature
Psalms 51:5 “Behold, I was shaped in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
Psalms 58:3 “The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.”
A child need not be taught how to lie, to be selfish, or to do wrong; these things come naturally. Every sweet, innocent, cuddly baby possesses within his flesh the constant temptation to fulfill the strong desire of sin. Under the control of sin, the child is totally self-centered; he wants what he wants when he wants it. A child wants to be fed what and when he wishes, to have the total attention of others, to play always, and generally to have his every desire fulfilled without regard for anyone else.
Anyone who doubts that a child posses this inherent nature of sin need only observe untrained children in action. Imagine two children left in a room with a single toy of equal interest to each. Or, visualize a child left alone in a room with an open jar of candy. Finally, consider a child who has been left with the decision about his bedtime or anything else he may not wish to do (such as bathe, work, or study). These examples picture the reality of a child’s drive for self-gratification.
Even when a child conducts himself with acceptable behavior, he may be acting out of self-interest to gain attention or future reward. An intelligent child or one who is strong-willed can deceive a parent into thinking that he is inherently good and only occasionally acts badly. Naturally, parents always want to see their child as they would like for him to be, not as he really is. You can avoid this deception when you realize that the nature of sin will motivate a child to do whatever bad, or even good, that he thinks will cause benefit to himself.
When parents recognize that the natural, normal tendency of their child is to satisfy his own sinful nature, they are ready to become successful parents. You cannot be successful in child training as long as you imagine that your child is an innocent, sweet cherub who is naturally good. The argument that “children will be children” is true. It is also true that they will remain that way if left to their own natures. For the child’s own good, he must not be allowed to function under the control of his sinful nature.

The preacher was wired for sound with a lapel mic, and as he preached, he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mic cord as he went. Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping before jerking it again.
After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third pew leaned toward her mother and whispered,"If he gets loose, will he hurt us?"

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued
By J. Richard Fugate
Mankind is Now Reproduced in the “Likeness of Adam”

Genesis 5:3 “And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness after his image;…”

Mankind no longer exists in the state of original creation, but has been altered according to the image of corrupted humanity. This state has been perpetuated through birth.
Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for all have sinned.”
Romans 5:18a “Therefore, as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation,”
Ephesians 2:1 “And you hath he made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins:”
The results of this fallen state are threefold:
1. Each member of the human race is born with a moral, physical body (subject to physical death).
2. Each is born with his spirit separated from fellowship with God (in a state of spiritual death).
3. Each ids born with a soul that is subject to9 the penalty for sin (eternal condemnation).
It is in this condition that a child enters the world. Until a child becomes cognizant of sin, righteousness, and judgment, he is protected by God’s law of accountability. Once a child becomes accountable, his personal acts of sin vindicate the righteousness of God’s judgment. (It is beyond the scope of this book to develop the doctrine of accountability.)

A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination, looking at the old pages as he turned them. Then something fell out, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages.
"Momma, look what I found," the boy called out.
"What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked.
With astonishment in the his voice, he answered, "It's Adam's Suit!"
