WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued By J. Richard Fugate
Children Must Be Restrained By Their Parents
Proverbs 29:15 “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself bringeth his mother shame.”
The word from the Hebrew translated “left to himself” is sometimes used of animals pasturing without fences or restraint. This word is also used in a general sense “to send off.” When contrasted with a child who is controlled by his parents, it pictures a child who is sent off into adulthood without being trained. The principle taught by this verse is that a child will grow up in conformity with his sinful nature if he is not restrained by his parents. In another verse God warns:
1 Samuel 3:13 “For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knoweth, because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.”
In this verse, God is speaking about Eli, the priest who raised two evil sons. His sons are now adults, but Eli is being judged because as their parent he did not restrain their sinful nature. The Hebrew word here translated “restrained” means “to make weak or feeble.” In other words, Eli should have used his parental authority to cause his sons’ sinful nature to have a feeble effect on them. Eli did not make his sons evil; “[they] made themselves vile,” but Eli did not prevent it. This verse indicates that the parent is responsible to control his child’s evil tendencies.
A child left to himself, or unrestrained by his parents, is subject to the control of his sinful nature. He is born with neither the knowledge to know what is right and best for himself, nor the internal control to conquer his constant temptation to sin. The longer a child is allowed to grow up unrestrained, the more he becomes enslaved to the self-indulgence of his desires. It would be cruel not to help him control himself.

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother," she asked "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."
