One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping."

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued
By J. Richard Fugate
The Child’s Nature
We have seen what the Bible about parents’ responsibility to train their children in conformance with God’s standards, their position of rulership, and their accountability to God for His gift of life – the child. Now, exactly who is this child we are to train? What in his make-up requires such extensive training? Why is the power of parental authority necessary?
To answer these questions, we will study what the Bible teaches about the composition of this creature called child. To understand children it is necessary first to understand the origin of mankind.
Mankind Was Originally Created in the “Image of God”
Genesis 1:26a “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”
God is perfect, and all His creation was perfect in its original state. Even Satan was perfect when he came into existence (Ezekiel 28:12b-15). At the time of man’s creation by God, man also was perfect in his humanity. Mankind began his existence in a state of blessing, but man (like Satan before him) chose to act contrary to the express will of God. God expressed His will to man explicitly by His Word.
Genesis 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shall not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
Man’s subsequent, willful act of sin in transgressing the known standard of God caused a change in the nature of man. When sin entered into the world, mankind became a corruption of God’s original creation. He became separated from God, subject to death, and under judicial sentence of the all-righteous God. Mankind then began to reproduce itself “after its kind.”

Goat for Dinner: The young couple invited their elderly pastor for Sunday dinner. While they were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the minister asked their son what they were having. "Goat," the little boy replied. "Goat?" replied the startled man of the cloth, "Are you sure about that?"Yep," said the youngster. "I heard Dad say to Mom, 'Today is just as good as any to have the old goat for dinner'."

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued By J. Richard Fugate

Being a Parent - Summary

We have seen that the Bible clearly defines the positions of the parent and the child. It also defines the consequences resulting from meeting or failing to meet God’s standards. Let us review some of the major principles about parents:
*Blessings of great joy and satisfaction exist for both the father and mother who
properly train their children, while the cursing of great sorrow is the
consequence to those who do not.
*The soul life of each child is the creation of God, and God has a plan and a
purpose for anything He creates.
*God intends for children to be trained by their parents according to His
standards.
*Child training is dependent on the child’s respect for his parent’s position of
authority.
*The principle of authority was designed by God for the orderly administration
of His plan for mankind and is totally under His control.
*Parental authority is the most extensive of all institutions and includes the right
to demand obedience from children.
*The parents’ word is law to their children.
*Parents are responsible to raise obedient and respectful children.
*Parents are accountable to God alone for their rulership.
*Children who honor their parents are blessed with physical prosperity, whereas
those who rebel in overt disrespect receive the cursing of a living death and/or
a violent end.
*Parents must provide strong leadership for their children and stand responsible
for their outside influences.
*Parents are the symbol and representative of God’s authority to their children.
At this point, you may not know how you are going to obtain obedience or respect from your children, or exactly what you are expected to teach them. But, you should understand both your responsibility of rulership over the children and your accountability to God for how that responsibility is handled. You also may begin to see how much your child needs your rulership to protect him.
Parents must come to understand that fulfilling parental responsibilities is the expression of their love for their children. In other words, if you love your children, rule them.
With this orientation to parental authority from God’s point of view, we will next see what God’s Word reveals about this child we are to train.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued By J. Richard Fugate
Parental Responsibility
Another technique of parents in attempting to avoid their responsibility is to pass the buck to God. This is done by telling a child who will not obey that God will punish him for his disobedience. Parents are God’s chosen representatives of authority over children to teach about and administer justice. Parents cannot pass the responsibility back to God. God’s Word tells parents that they are not only to tell their children what to do, but also to enforce obedience to their instructions. This is the parents’ job, not God’s. A child learns obedience to parents as preparation for his obeying God.
Parents are the symbol and representative of God’s authority to their children. The way parents handle their rulership is the way children will begin to think about God and all other authorities under God. Parents are in a very crucial position in the child’s life. Let us look at how a child thinks. If he sees his parents are fair, then he will consider that God must also be fair. If his parents punish for wrong, then God will punish for wrong. If his parents care for him, then God must care for him. If his parents respect and obey God’s Word, then he must respect and obey God. If his parents mean what they say, then God must mean what He says.
As a parent, you have the opportunity to mold the child’s opinions about God, proper government, and his or her marriage relationship. A child who is required to obey his parents will come to respect their authority and will thus be prepared to submit to other authorities, including God’s Word.

“What does the Lord your God require of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and your entire being.”
Deuteronomy 10:12

I will cry to God Most High, Who performs on my behalf and rewards me [Who brings to pass His purposes for me and surely completes them]!

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT…CHILD TRAINING continued
By J. Richard Fugate

Parental Responsibility
This may be the first time you have realized that you are, and have the right to be, the ruler over your children. Since God has placed you in this position, you should function as one who has the right to rule. In other words, your children need to know that you are in charge. This means that you make the decisions, not the children. You are to decide when it is time for bed, what is to be eaten or not eaten, and what activities are permitted. These decisions belong to the parent until the child has been trained to make the right decisions himself. The parent even decides when and in what areas the child is allowed to make his own decisions.

Children need an authority figure. If parents do not provide the needed leadership, their children will seek it elsewhere. Without firm leadership in the home, children will find someone outside of the family who will tell them what to do. Children desperately need someone whom they can follow and to whom they can give their allegiance. God has made their souls to respond to parental authority; therefore, they will find a replacement if the parents abdicate their position.
It should be no surprise that leaderless children respond to cults, such as the Moonies and the Jones groups, street gangs, or revolutionary movements. These counterculture groups all have one thing in common – they demand followership. They each provide strong leadership, teach and enforce rules, and set a purpose for the life of the follower. Dare we as parents offer less?
