“High Gas Prices? –No Problem”

I received a call from Sean Coakley last Tuesday. It seems that God had just blessed him and he wanted to share the testimony with Robin and me. He had been stranded at his aunt’s house (who happens to live about 300 miles away) for a few days –no gas money! He had gone to surprise them with a visit; only he was the one ending up being surprised.

While he was taking his cousin to her mother’s place of work he added up the money he had left in his pocket and the money that his aunt was going to give him only to find out that he was still $50 short. He said that he knew that he needed around $102 dollars to get back home. His aunt was giving him $40 and he had $12. While they were sitting there waiting for his aunt to get off work, her boss came in. Sean said the two looked at one another and shared pleasantries as he walked into his office.

A few minutes later the boss reappeared handing Sean $50! He told Sean that he was a Christian and that God had told him, “to give that young man fifty dollars.” Now, because that Christian was obedient, another Christian was blessed. Not only did Sean now have enough money to get home, but the incident also showed him that God was watching over him for his good. Sean told me that he had miscalculated the trip because of the high gas prices; he blamed himself for being stranded. And now he knows that even if we get ourselves into pickles; God is still there, still watching, still providing.

I was blessed by Sean’s call because I see that this incident is a microcosm of our situation today in the United States. Over the years the United States has slowly walked away from God. We have taken His blessing, but have not returned the favor. We have systematically removed him from our children’s lives. We have taken prayer out of the schools, the Ten Commandments off the walls and the mention of Jesus as God’s means of salvation. Because we have miscalculated the strength of God and have not considered the consequences of turning our backs to Him, our economy is suffering and (I believe) on a very dangerous precipice.

We need national repentance! We need a national day of fasting and a genuine seeking after God. We need to stop being so arrogant and humble ourselves under His mighty hand. Perhaps He will relent from sending judgment. Maybe He will send a blessing instead. God has spoken: “If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

I don’t wish for the United States to be “stranded” because of her miscalculation of the power of God. I don’t want her to be deceived –God cannot be mocked; she will reap what she has sown… And so, I want to be like that Christian boss, who was obedient and blessed Sean. I truly believe that if we all became obedient to God we will bless this great nation of ours. May the Lord have mercy on us.

The Lord bless you this week!
